Iran keeps Hormuz shut while US Central Command says a billion barrels got through

Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened until Iran’s conditions are met and US commitments are implemented^3,6. He described Tehran’s negotiating position as entirely clear, rational and non-negotiable⁸. Iran had conveyed its conditions for reopening the strait to Washington through mediators². Iran closed the strait, one of the world’s most important waterways for oil and gas shipments, after Washington and Tehran had reached an earlier agreement⁷.

US Central Command gives a different picture of the same passage. CENTCOM said that more than a billion barrels of crude oil crossed the Strait of Hormuz over two months^5,10, with Admiral Brad Cooper making the statement on Saturday¹³ and the command announcing it on Sept. 19¹¹. Iran has disputed the CENTCOM claim that it escorted tankers carrying that volume¹².

What the traffic data show

The shipping counts sit uneasily between the two positions. Four ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, against a 10-day average of 16⁴. Iran said it hit the tanker Trend on Friday⁴. One assessment describes the strait as effectively closed and the oil and gas crisis as going from bad to worse⁴.

Other reporting points the other way. Hormuz oil shipments hit a six-month high, according to the US commander¹. Shipping traffic through Hormuz dwindled after attacks across the Middle East intensified¹⁰. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Sept 13 that markets will need to continue relying on transit he estimates at 10 million barrels a day¹.

Why it matters to investors

Freight, insurance and fuel pricing depend on which account is closer to the truth, and the two are not reconcilable on their face: a waterway cannot be both effectively closed⁴ and the route for a billion barrels in two months^5,10. The distinction that may explain the gap is between commercial transit and convoyed transit, since CENTCOM’s claim is specifically about tankers its forces escorted¹².

The United States says it is working to secure navigation in the strait while talks between Washington and Tehran remain stalled and the war continues⁵. One forecast holds that most Middle East crude oil production will likely return¹¹.

Two markers are worth tracking. The first is the daily crossing count against its 10-day average⁴, which is a harder number than either side’s characterisation. The second is the state of the talks themselves: Trump returned to the White House from Camp David early amid Middle East tensions⁹, and Iran’s conditions for reopening are already with Washington².
